Magical Alter Egos

Step 1

A lot of the time, alter egos are used by artists and musicians to be their whole selves, because as people we often break our personality into pieces and show those pieces to select groups. For example, do you behave the same way around your parents as you do your friends? How about your teachers? Or around the cashier in the grocery store? Alter egos usually let you be who you really are in a way that is comfortable and safe. For this project, you are going to think about who you are around all these different people in your lives and put your personalities into one magical alter ego.

Step 2

Get inspired! Take a look at some of these representations of self.Color, shape, and different materials are all used to symbolize who they really are!

Step 3

The Task

Gather your materials and get ready to get creative.

You can use anything you want for this, but here are some suggestions:

  • glue/double-sided tape-scissors

  • Magazines

  • Old drawings

  • Fabric (old t-shirts, loose pieces of fabric, etc.)

  • Plants/found natural objects

  • Paint

  • Optional: Printer

  1. First, find a full body picture of yourself. If you have a printer, print it out and skip to step 3.

  2. Draw a stick figure posed how you are in the picture on a piece of paper. This figure drawing technique will be the bones of your alter ego and will help you keep proportions right.

  3. Think about the way your friends see you and how your personality is around them. What in your collage materials can be used to represent this? You can use color, cutouts, old drawings, etc. Place it as the head and neck of your figure but DO NOT PASTE IT YET. If you printed your picture, just do all the steps on top of the picture rather than a figure drawing.

  4. Think about the way your family/household members see you and how your personality is around them. What in your collage materials can be used to represent this? Place it as the torso and arms of your figure but DO NOT PASTE IT YET.

  5. Think about the way your teachers or coaches see you and how your personality is around them. What in your collage materials can be used to represent this? Place it as the torso and arms of your figure but DO NOT PASTE IT YET.

  6. Now that you have your pieces, move them aside for the time being to focus on the background. In what place do you feel like yourself the most? Why? It can be your room, your local park, school, etc. Now use any materials to make a representational recreation of this place.

  7. Once your background is done, reassemble your pieces onto your background and paste them in place.

  8. If you haven’t already, add any little details to your figure and background that will give your alter ego a little more personality.

  9. If you want, take a picture with your finished magical alter ego and post it online.
